But as the tax authorities look for cheats, they are finding that many people who are eligible for homestead exemptions fail to apply, even though the exemptions can provide valuable breaks on property taxes — the issue in Mr. Rangel’s case — as well as protection from creditors.

DID Bertie Wooster mean to harm Barbara Geltosky in September 2008? The evidence against him is damning. For instance, the hole that Bertie, Ms. Geltosky’s 5-year-old Norwegian elkhound, dug in the garden was 12 inches across and 12 inches deep — the perfect size for a human foot.

“It was a hole I didn’t see,” said Ms. Geltosky, 59, a retired art teacher who lives with her husband in Malvern, Pa., some 20 miles west of Philadelphia. “I was getting compost when I went down. I twisted my knee badly enough to have rehab.”

Consider going green, Homeowners embarking on a kitchen remodel typically must select the style, the quality of craftsmanship and the materials that meet their project goals. With the pressing need to increase energy efficiency and conserve resources, more people are opting these days to “go green” in their choices.

“Incorporating green elements into a kitchen remodel is no longer considered just a passing fad, but a way of life,” said Dick Titus, executive vice president of the Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association (KCMA). “Homeowners feel a responsibility to choose products that are safe for the environment and for their families.”

After a long day at work, Chuck Abare, 63, a computer designer, likes to sit on the porch of his two-story ranch house on the outskirts of Huntsville, Ala., drink a gin and tonic, and watch the antics of the purple martins winging around his backyard.

Glossy aerial acrobats with forked tails, purple martins are a type of swallow, and the only species of bird entirely dependent on humans for housing. Every spring, Mr. Abare said, they show up to nest in the bulbous chandelier-like birdhouses he made several years ago out of plywood and hollowed-out gourds, and mounted on 12-foot poles.

Make the waiting less painful by breaking out your toolbox. A few cheap fixes — painting cabinets, swapping out old knobs and pulls, and replacing your ceiling lights — can make a huge difference.

Consider tackling the following three projects too. They’re just a bit more difficult but bring big benefits to the look and feel of your kitchen — and cost less than $1,000 each.

It’s a quick way to dress up an old kitchen, not to mention protect your walls from stains and even fires. If you’re not eager to mess with mastic and grout, consider Aspect Tile’s new peel-and-stick metal tiles.

In the general scheme of life, parents are the ones who keep tabs on the children. But now, a raft of new technology is making it possible for adult children to monitor to a stunningly precise degree the daily movements and habits of their aging parents.

The purpose is to provide enough supervision to make it possible for elderly people to stay in their homes rather than move to an assisted-living facility or nursing home — a goal almost universally embraced as both emotionally and financially desirable. With that in mind, a vast spectrum of companies, from giants like General Electric to start-ups like iReminder of Westfield, N.J., which has developed a system to notify families if loved ones haven’t taken their medicine, are looking for a piece of the market of families with an aging relative.

THE first Tea Party got one thing right: drinking tea is un-American. Camellia sinensis, the common tea shrub, will survive in most warm, humid climates. But tea plantations never took root in American soil.

The evils of Asian tea and British customs duties may not top the Tea Party platform these days. But the Glenn Becks of the 1770s were compelled to invent their version of freedom fries — a drink they called liberty tea. They made it from plants like goldenrod and Labrador tea (Ledum groenlandicum, a variant of the heath family). Newspapers published herbal recipes, mixing common plants like peppermint, marjoram, hyssop, rosemary, raspberry, lavender, fennel, dill and thyme.
