Testing Seventeen Stain Removers

I tested 17 stain removers on an array of substances applied to white cotton napkins. A generous amount of each product — spray, gel or roll-on stick — was applied to the stains. Then each napkin was washed separately, to avoid cross-contamination, in a machine set to the hot-water cycle, with an ounce of liquid laundry detergent.

The napkins were dried and examined thoroughly in bright natural light, which sometimes revealed ghosts of stains. Later, they were re-treated 12 hours before being washed again.

For the stains, I chose ones that are often mentioned in advertisements: blood (beef, from my butcher), red wine (dry, Italian), ketchup, mustard, chocolate syrup (Hershey’s), grass (wheat grass juice), ink (rollerball and ballpoint), makeup (Cover Girl’s Classic Tan foundation) and lipstick (Revlon’s Ravish Me Red).
