A Checklist For Your Personal Budget

Encore: Finding Work that Matters in the Second Half of Life

If you haven’t set money aside for a rainy day, you’re one job loss or illness away from financial ruin. Most consumers should save between three and six months’ worth of living expenses in a liquid interest-bearing account. Those who are self-employed or work in a high turnover industry should have up to a year’s worth tucked away.

When you make your budget plans you need to plan for some of your money to go to entertainment and fun. If you do not set your personal budget up this way you will find it to be to restrictive and likely not follow it. You need allocate some of your income toward fun and entertainment and budget for it by cutting out some other expense.

Failing to face financial realities is what financial planners call the “ostrich syndrome”. Those folks hide their heads in the sand when dunning letters start coming in and they quit reading the mail or answering the phone. Or the bills mount up and they count on winning a lottery. This is prelude to disaster. Know your financial status, even if it hurts. Then, if necessary, take steps to improve it.

Underestimating the cost of ownership is a problem for many consumers. The original cost is sometimes not the only cost of ownership. This is especially true of an automobile. Many of the costs are obvious but some get overlooked. If a car is bought on an installment basis, monthly payments are just a small part of the cost of operating it. You are cautioned to think about all the costs. Operating expenses are: gas and oil , repairs, maintenance, tires, insurance. Other costs include registration, license, parking, tolls, etc. In addition, a new car costing $11,000 depreciates in value by about $2,500 during the first year. While depreciation is not an out-of-pocket cost, it does become one when the car is traded on another one.

Look Your Best With A Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck, also referred to as “Abdominoplasty” is a surgical procedure designed to flatten the abdomen by removing excess skin. We baby boomers often find ourselves with excess skin and fat around the belly. A tummy tuck addresses this unsightly problem equally well for both women and men.

In a full tummy tuck, a surgeon will most often make a long incision across the hipbone directly above the pubic area, with a second incision to free the navel from surrounding tissue. The surgeon will then separate the skin from the abdominal wall up to the ribs, lifting a large skin flap to reveal the vertical muscles in the abdomen. The doctor will then tighten the muscles by pulling them close together and stitching them into their new position.

We have found that many patients qualify for a “minimum” or mini-tummy tuck, if most of their fat is carried below their navel. This is considered a less complex procedure.

Either a complete or Beverly Hills tummy tuck will dramatically reduce the unwanted appearance of a protruding abdomen. The procedures are usually outpatient in nature; dependent upon individual circumstances and the extent of surgery. During the procedure local anesthesia is administered.

As the only plastic surgery center on Rodeo Drive, this well-known Beverly Hills plastic surgeon maintains offices in a 5,000 square feet suite which features five exam rooms and a state of the art surgery center. Their facilities include a surgery center with full-sized operating rooms and private recovery suites that have been accredited by both the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care and Medicare.

With the latest equipment and superior staff to provide maximum safety and comfort, since day one, the surgeons and staff maintain one overriding and enduring philosophy, that plastic surgical procedures will be your first step to permanent lifestyle enhancement.

Rodeo Drive Plastic Surgery provides superb service in a setting of glamour, sophistication and luxury. their office décor features the tasteful use of stone, bamboo, marble, glass, steel and fine art to provide a feeling of safety, relaxation and special attention to your needs. And, to ensure your confidentiality, the facility provides for private access through a discrete back entrance.

Before You Go “Green” With Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFLs)

What to Do if a Fluorescent Light Bulb Breaks

Compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) are lighting more homes than ever before, and EPA is encouraging Americans to use and recycle them safely. Carefully recycling CFLs prevents the release of mercury into the environment and allows for the reuse of glass, metals and other materials that make up fluorescent lights.

Fluorescent light bulbs contain a very small amount of mercury sealed within the glass tubing. EPA recommends the following clean-up and disposal below. Please also read the information on this page about what never to do with a mercury spill.

Before Clean-up: Air Out the Room

* Have people and pets leave the room, and don’t let anyone walk through the breakage area on their way out.
* Open a window and leave the room for 15 minutes or more.
* Shut off the central forced-air heating/air conditioning system, if you have one.

Clean-Up Steps for Hard Surfaces

* Carefully scoop up glass pieces and powder using stiff paper or cardboard and place them in a glass jar with metal lid (such as a canning jar) or in a sealed plastic bag.
* Use sticky tape, such as duct tape, to pick up any remaining small glass fragments and powder.
* Wipe the area clean with damp paper towels or disposable wet wipes. Place towels in the glass jar or plastic bag.
* Do not use a vacuum or broom to clean up the broken bulb on hard surfaces.

Clean-up Steps for Carpeting or Rug

* Carefully pick up glass fragments and place them in a glass jar with metal lid (such as a canning jar) or in a sealed plastic bag.
* Use sticky tape, such as duct tape, to pick up any remaining small glass fragments and powder.
* If vacuuming is needed after all visible materials are removed, vacuum the area where the bulb was broken.
* Remove the vacuum bag (or empty and wipe the canister), and put the bag or vacuum debris in a sealed plastic bag.

Clean-up Steps for Clothing, Bedding and Other Soft Materials

* If clothing or bedding materials come in direct contact with broken glass or mercury-containing powder from inside the bulb that may stick to the fabric, the clothing or bedding should be thrown away. Do not wash such clothing or bedding because mercury fragments in the clothing may contaminate the machine and/or pollute sewage.
* You can, however, wash clothing or other materials that have been exposed to the mercury vapor from a broken CFL, such as the clothing you are wearing when you cleaned up the broken CFL, as long as that clothing has not come into direct contact with the materials from the broken bulb.
* If shoes come into direct contact with broken glass or mercury-containing powder from the bulb, wipe them off with damp paper towels or disposable wet wipes. Place the towels or wipes in a glass jar or plastic bag for disposal.

Disposal of Clean-up Materials

* Immediately place all clean-up materials outdoors in a trash container or protected area for the next normal trash pickup.
* Wash your hands after disposing of the jars or plastic bags containing clean-up materials.
* Check with your local or state government about disposal requirements in your specific area. Some states do not allow such trash disposal. Instead, they require that broken and unbroken mercury-containing bulbs be taken to a local recycling center.

Future Cleaning of Carpeting or Rug: Air Out the Room During and After Vacuuming

* The next several times you vacuum, shut off the central forced-air heating/air conditioning system and open a window before vacuuming.
* Keep the central heating/air conditioning system shut off and the window open for at least 15 minutes after vacuuming is completed.

Cleaning up a broken CFL by vacuuming up the smaller debris particles in an un-vented room can elevate mercury concentrations over the MAAG in the room and it can linger at these levels for hours. Vacuuming tends to mix the air within the room such that the one foot and five foot heights are similar immediately after vacuuming. A vacuum can become contaminated by mercury such that it cannot be easily decontaminated. Vacuuming a carpet where a lamp has broken and been visibly cleaned up, even weeks after the cleanup, can elevate the mercury readings over the MAAG in an un-vented room.

The decision on whether or not to remove carpet where there was a broken lamp may depend on a number of factors including the location of the carpet (e.g. where a child plays or where the carpet is frequently agitated), the occupants of the household, or possibly the type of lamp broken.

Finally, it is unclear what the exact health risks are from exposure to low levels of elemental mercury, especially for sensitive populations, so advising for the careful handling and thoughtful placement of CFLs may be important.

House Plans For The Perfect Retirement Home

Maybe the first and most enjoyable step in building your retirement home is finding the perfect set of house plans. It used to be, lists of house plans were only available in print format, found in books and magazines. But, with the advent of the Internet, and made universally available with high-speed broadband connections, illustrations and working drawings of beautiful houses are available to retirees 24/7, every day of the year.

Many baby boomers, coming from the 60’s era of a “back to nature” lifestyle, consider building in remote, rural area and are seeking log home plans. Lucky for them, one Internet site specializes in just such building types.

By definition, a log house is made from logs that have not been milled into manufactured, building lumber. Generally, two forms of log homes are constructed in the United States; “handcrafted” and “milled.” A handcrafted log home is typically made of logs that have been peeled but are essentially unchanged from their original natural appearance and usually have been treated to resist rot and insect damage. A milled log home is of the sort constructed of logs that have been crafted with a manufacturing process to remove natural imperfections and then converted into timbers that are consistent in size and appearance.

Log cabin plans are similar to log house plans; however, the term “cabin” indicates a smaller, more rustic, residence which might appeal to a retirement couple who have no need for thousands of square feet of home to maintain.
