How Boise Cascade Plans To Deal With Baby Boomer Retirements

Stop the 401(k) Rip-off!: Eliminate Costly Hidden Fees to Improve Your Life

Boise Cascade is a manufacturer of engineered wood products, plywood, lumber, and particleboard. In addition, the company distributes a broad line of building materials. Boise also manufactures specialty and premium paper products, printing and converting papers, container-board and corrugated boxes, newsprint, and market pulp.

The company employs over 10,000 employees, with approximately 850 people working at the Boise Cascade paper mill in International Falls, Minnesota. Company spokesman Bob Anderson says in the next five years alone, Boise will lose 15 percent of its workforce through retirement among the baby boomers. Anderson says the trend has already resulted in a hiring boost.

Not just in International Falls, Minnesota, but across the nation, competition for needed workers will be fierce. In just three years, the oldest of the country’s 78 million baby boomers will start turning 65 at a rate of about 8,000 a day.

Saturday’s Weight Loss Tips

Yoga Booty Ballet: Total Toning Basics ; Advanced Fat Burning (Beachbody)
  • Instead of counting calories, concentrate on reducing your fat intake. Fat that you eat converts more readily into body fat than does protein or carbohydrate.
  • Try to enjoy your food, eat it slowly and consciously.
  • Snack between meals - starving yourself for 6 or 7 hours at a time between lunch and dinner means you will overeat at dinner.
  • Focus on one thing at a time. Everything we do is based on habits. If you’ve got to both get into the habit of eating great and exercising daily, you run a big risk of getting overwhelmed when you’re not seeing results or you slip a little.
  • And since this is the weekend, only diet on weekdays. Don’t binge on weekends, but save two days a week to eat the yummy things. Also, because many people really can’t break that chocolate addiction, calculate one treat every day into your calories.

Single Baby Boomers Lifestyle Rapidly Changing

Boomer\'s Guide to Dating (Again)

According to a recent article in the Toronto Sun, a recent survey indicated that single boomers treasure the personal freedom of the single life, but also plan to work longer and have concerns about who will care for them in their elder years.

Personal freedom and the ability to manage personal finances without interference were cited by respondents as the most important values in their lives. Near a majority, 43% of respondents said they will likely retire later in life because they are single and 28% said they plan to work past the traditional retirement age of 60 to 65.

Yet, many single boomers don’t have children and are worried that they may not have someone to care for them in old age and they don’t have a financial plan designed to meet the unique needs of being single.

The survey supports the notion that a personal financial plan is absolutely necessary to secure personal freedom into the future, especially for singles who don’t have the built-in support of a spouse or partner.

Retirees Heading Overseas

The Expert Expat, Revised Edition: Your Guide to Successful Relocation Abroad

This year marks the first wave of baby boomers who will hit retirement age. For those folks, life overseas beckons. However, retiring abroad will give those retirees logistical headaches.

Many of today’s boomers are heading permanently offshore to stretch their retirement dollars. Those expatriates will be presented with a number of challenges, ranging from opening a local bank account to avoiding being gouged for services.

Many countries, from Belize to South Africa, offer inducements to attract foreign retirees. However, making sure you’ve got health insurance can be a big problem. Few U.S. employers offer health-care coverage to retirees that reside out-of-country. U.S. carriers typically don’t provide individual coverage to Americans living abroad. Moreover, the federal Medicare program generally doesn’t cover costs outside the U.S. As such, many retirees either pay out of pocket or, once eligible for Medicare at age 65, return to the U.S. from time to time for care. Baby Boomers And The Health Care Entitlement

The Age of Turbulence: Adventures in a New World

Alan Greenspan , in his recent book The Age of Turbulence, makes untenable predictions about the future of Medicare. As Baby Boomers age, that age group will require more and more services. However, the number of younger people working to support the boomers will be fewer.

Greenspan contends that the cost pressures will be so severe that some kind of adjustment will be inevitable. It could be inflation or higher taxes. Or it might be lower benefits for all or a reallocation of benefits among income groups meaning lower benefits for higher-income people.

To keep the system solvent, boomers will need to compromise.

In this article, writer Bob Brady asks

If we spend a greater and greater portion of our economic resources on health care, at some point we end up crippling other parts of the economy. Will health care–and our near-religious belief that everyone ought to get everything–end up being the “belief” that causes the “collapse” of the American economy?

Superbowl Weight Loss Tips

Escali Primo Digital Multifunctional Scale, Chrome

Yes, today is Superbowl Sunday in the United States, a day of professional football and …. gluttony.

As fun as this day can be, historically the final football game of the season is often synonymous with food and drink. Would it be that fans munched on veggies and fruit pieces, then this day’s carb intake would be manageable.

But, with wings, chips, dip and beer, the carb and fat count go “to the moon”. Here are our tips to make this day one “not to remember” for us that watch our waistline.

  • Tell others your goals. Not only will you then have someone else also expecting you to perform but you’ll gain a cheering section,
  • Prepare a snack tray of veggies, fruit and low-fat dip made from store-bought salad dressing,
  • Eat as soon after you get up as possible. This gets your metabolism working at a higher rate sooner in the day,
  • Get off the couch and take a long walk, coming home 1/2 hour before kickoff (6:17 EDT),
  • Finally, think about how much food you would waste by overeating. Your body doesn’t need all the food that’s on display, so why waste it? You can eat the Superbowl party leftovers for lunch the next day and save yourself some money. You could give it to the adult day care center down the block who really needs it. Any reason you find not to waste that food is a good one.

Humerous Bill Gates Retirement Skit On The David Letterman Show

Bill Gates Retirement

Real Estate Blogger

Online real estate broker Redfin is looking to hire a few good part-time bloggers to give color to real estate market trends.

The goal is to create an insanely addictive blog about everything that moves in San Diego real estate. We’re hiring for neighborhoods in La Jolla, University City and Clairemont at the moment. For your neighborhood, Redfin would send you all sorts of data on fixer-uppers, price reductions, past sales, and listing inventory. It would be your job to process this data and create easy to understand, yet thought-provoking posts. What you’d get out of it: the inside scoop, a creative outlet, the glory of an online cult following, and good money, every month. We’d expect 3 posts per week, mostly on market trends, but some on real estate tips, news and neighborhood guides. You’d also have to monitor and respond to comments, deleting the offensive ones.

Qualifications:
• Good writing skills: no-BS prose with flair, and a dash of humor too
• An analytical mind: the ability to read between the numbers and tell a story
• Love of real estate: real estate was a favorite pastime before you read this ad
• Local knowledge: know your neighborhood
• Internet savvy: we’d want to teach you about blogs, but you’d have to be a quick study

No real estate agents please, at least not if you have any listings (which would make you biased). Starting pay is $120 per week, for only a few hours of fun and rewarding work. To apply, send us a 200-word writing sample of how the housing market in your city is performing (you can use fictional numbers) along with a short note about yourself. Please indicate which neighborhoods you’d like to cover!

* Location: North San Diego
* Telecommuting is ok.
* This is a part-time job.
