How Boise Cascade Plans To Deal With Baby Boomer Retirements
Boise Cascade is a manufacturer of engineered wood products, plywood, lumber, and particleboard. In addition, the company distributes a broad line of building materials. Boise also manufactures specialty and premium paper products, printing and converting papers, container-board and corrugated boxes, newsprint, and market pulp.
The company employs over 10,000 employees, with approximately 850 people working at the Boise Cascade paper mill in International Falls, Minnesota. Company spokesman Bob Anderson says in the next five years alone, Boise will lose 15 percent of its workforce through retirement among the baby boomers. Anderson says the trend has already resulted in a hiring boost.
Not just in International Falls, Minnesota, but across the nation, competition for needed workers will be fierce. In just three years, the oldest of the country’s 78 million baby boomers will start turning 65 at a rate of about 8,000 a day.
