Will Boomers Get What’s Coming To Them?

Somebody\'s Gotta Say It

USA Today has published an excellent article that discusses the doubts that some baby boomers are expressing about whether or not the government will deliver the full Social Security and Medicare benefits it has promised.

Of course, without a crystal ball, it’s impossible for anyone to predict the future. With their seemingly unchecked political muscle, the United States Congress will likely try to shield those in or near retirement from cutbacks in Social Security benefits, just to protect their incumbency. But a rough consensus among experts is that a projected long-term explosion of health care costs could force sweeping changes in Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security benefits.

Polls have shown that a majority of those 55 and older consider Social Security and other entitlement programs in crisis, rising to about 70% for younger people. Medicare draws less attention from baby boomers, even though it faces far more severe projected shortfalls than does Social Security. All entitlement programs, the ones that we have paid-into all out working lives, are being criticized by the Gen X and Gen Y workers.
