Build Your Mental Muscle With Fun And Games
Forever seeking the fountain of youth, boomers are more confident that their minds will stay sharper as they age than their bodies will. The reason? Many are already brain training by playing board games.
In fact, a recent survey conducted by Russell Research on behalf of Hasbro Games shows two-thirds of baby boomers play games to help stay mentally sharp and also feel their level of mental acuity is better than other people in their group. They even go so far as to describe themselves as feeling ten years younger than their actual age. Of those surveyed, 97 percent feel the brain can be trained or exercised to keep it healthy and sharp.
“With all the attention on baby boomers and how they are maintaining active and healthy lifestyles and postponing retirement, it’s no wonder they think playing games and doing puzzles to sharpen the mind are every bit as important for brain health as are a healthy diet and reading,” says Dr. Paul Nussbaum, a clinical neuropsychologist and brain health expert who specializes in aging across the life span.
Baby boomers are most likely to play games like SCRABBLE and TRIVIAL PURSUIT, with approximately 66 percent or more saying they play these games once a year or more often, the survey revealed. In addition, four-fifths of baby boomers indicate a benefit of playing board games is that it provides relaxation and is a stress reliever.
Their bigger concerns? Physical health and finances.
All In The Family
While baby boomers say playing board games is a stress reliever, that doesn’t mean competition is lacking. In fact, more than 40 percent of baby boomers dislike losing to their husband or wife, with other family members a distant second. You may be surprised to learn wives are more competitive with their spouses: 67 percent of women said they hated losing to their husbands, while 52 percent of men claimed to dislike conceding victory to their wives.
Among the most popular games baby boomers play:
o SCRABBLE
o MONOPOLY
o Poker
o TRIVIAL PURSUIT
Boomers have been playing board games for decades, with Monopoly edging out SCRABBLE 22 years to 21 years. Boomers also believe SCRABBLE is the board game with the greatest impact on mental acuity, slightly edging out chess.
