As many as three million Canadians suffer from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease COPD. That number is expected to climb steadily as the population ages, according to new research. The findings, a doubling of the previous estimates, are being published today by the Lung Association. They are in-line with the conclusions of a large international study issued earlier this year that found that the incidence of COPD is grossly underestimated and that the majority of sufferers are undiagnosed and untreated. A simple breathing test, called spirometry, is used to diagnose COPD. Spirometry involves blowing into a tube to calculate the amount of air the lungs can hold and the rate at which the air is expelled. Smoking is the number one cause of COPD. Baby Boomers are the bosses least likely to throw a holiday party, dole out bonuses or send so much as a fruit basket, according to a newly released survey commissioned by American Express. But Boomers aren’t the only bosses planning a skimpy holiday season, and smaller businesses aren’t the only ones affected. The glitter has gone out of company galas across the board. According to a poll of large companies by executive recruitment firm Battalia Winston International, 85 percent are planning parties, down from 94 percent. Clients as well as staff are likely to be left with an empty stocking. The sheer number of Baby Boomers may alter that perception and the way nursing homes approach issues of intimacy, said Peter Notarstefano, director of home and community - based services for the Washington, D.C.-based American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging, which has 5,700 members. “We have 2 million people living in nursing homes. About 60 percent have dementia of some sort,” he said. “By 2030, we’re going to have about 5 million because of the Baby Boomers, and we better do something about it. They’re going to want more freedom. We will have more sexually active adults going into their 80s and also people with less taboos about sex. So it’s going to be more of an issue.” Another issue is establishing that both parties involved in a relationship are consenting.
