Baby Boomers Embracing Electronic Gadgetry

Call it fear. Call it function fatigue. Either way, an increasing number of baby boomers say they’ve had it up to here with new technology. Some try and say they can’t master the small, complicated gadgets that young people love so. Others say they won’t even make an attempt without proof that wading through the thick manuals and squinting at small buttons will be worth it. Electronic and high-tech devices are seen as “tools” rather than “resources” by older people. They use new devices to replace older ones, not to do entirely new and exciting things. For example, cell phones can take video, download podcasts and do much more, but many older people still see them as Dick Tracy-type phones that don’t need a landline. Noisy Outlaws, Unfriendly Blobs, and Some Other Things . . .: That Aren\'t as Scary, Maybe, Depending on How You Feel About Lost Lands, Stray Cellphones, ... Quite Finish, So Maybe You Could Help Us Out

Many Baby Boomers Support Their Adult Children

The September/October Phenomenon (Recipe for Financial Disaster?) A recent survey conducted for Ameriprise Financial shows that close to 90 percent of baby boomers are providing at least some form of financial help to their adult children. The generosity doesn’t stop there. A considerable number also contribute dollars to support their aging parents, ranging from buying groceries to paying for long-term care. This puts boomers squarely in the middle, or “sandwiched” between older and younger generations. While some may have thought the years approaching retirement would be focused on building a nest egg, the reality for many is that both parents and adult children are placing financial demands that can hamper the ability to save for their own needs.

Baby Boomers Chose Whether To Buy a Home or Rent

Baby boomers facing, or in retirement may seriously consider renting or, if they would rather buy, at least scale down to a condominium with less maintenance involved than a house. Financially speaking, the decision needs to weigh what you would be paying for rent against what you’d want to pay for a house, factoring in taxes and potential appreciation. But the biggest question is this: “What’s your lifestyle?” If you’re traveling a lot, you may not want to be “tied down to a house,” and even if you tend to stay busy with activities closer to home, it’s likely that you’ll begin to hire out the “heavy-lifting” chores like yard work within the next decade or so. Everything You Need to Know Before Buying a Co-op, Condo, or Townhouse
