Housing Outlook For 2006 Impacts Baby Boomers

Baby Boomer retirement security: The roles of planning, financial literacy, and housing wealth [An article from: Journal of Monetary Economics] If interest rates and home prices don’t rise too quickly and if lenders continue to make mortgages with relaxed underwriting standards home buyers should continue to snatch up homes in record or near-record numbers. Baby boomers, less impacted by rising costs and interest rates, are at their peak earning and cash cache years and shouldn’t be thwarted by higher interest rates or prices. The combined demand from first and second home buyers will boost home building especially in Florida, Texas, North Carolina, Georgia, Arizona, California and nearby regions.

The Party’s Over, Retiring Baby Boomers May Bankrupt Social Security

At the end of World War II, 42 workers were supporting each retiree. Today that ratio is three workers per retiree, and when the baby boomers have all retired it will shrink to two to one. Because of rising medical costs, Medicare is on even shakier ground. The hospital insurance portion of that program is already dipping into its shrinking reserves, and Social Security will start doing the same in a decade.

Support for the status quo on Social Security and Medicare has traditionally benefitted Democrats, but that could be changing for those who refuse to address the problem. Sen. Hillary Clinton, the frontrunner for her party’s presidential nomination, is particularly evasive on the subject.

There are essentially only three ways to maintain the financial stability of the current Social Security program: raise the retirement age, cut benefits and/or raise payroll taxes. Clinton has inexplicably ruled out all three. That position runs counter to, among others, her husband when he was president. Read more »

“Working” Towards Retirement

With more of the nation’s 76 million baby boomers heading into their retirement years, experts note there will be an increasing need for people to keep working well past 60. That’s in part because they’re healthier and living longer, but also because they haven’t been saving sufficiently for a traditional retirement and face the prospect of future cuts in Social Security benefits. According to data from The Employee Benefit Research Institute and research firm Mathew Greenwald and Associates, 43 percent of people age 55 and older — the largest contingent in that group — have saved less than $25,000 for retirement. Social Security Experiences First Wave of Boomers

J.K. Lasser\'s Your Winning Retirement Plan The first wave of 3.2 million baby boomers turns 62 next year. That equates to 365 retirees per hour. About 49% of the men and 53% of the women are projected to choose early retirement and begin drawing monthly Social Security checks representing 75% of the benefit they’d be entitled to receive if they waited four more years to retire. In 2011, they’ll turn 65 and be eligible for Medicare. In 2012, those who didn’t take early retirement benefits will turn 66 and qualify for their full share. By 2030, Social Security’s caseload will be 84 million people, up from 50 million today. Medicare will go from 44 million beneficiaries to 79 million. That will leave barely more than two workers paying payroll taxes for every retiree. The boomer retirements have demographers, actuaries and economists worried as they prepare for an estimated $50 trillion in future obligations over the next 75 years. Social Security will rise from 4% to 6% of the nation’s economy. Medicare will go from 3% to 11%.

Research Reveals Ten Baby Boomer Facts

Tekarati presents us with a fascinating report on ten baby boomer facts. Of particular interest “A fairly large portion of Boomers are potentially unprotected financially should they face serious medical issues. Almost one-quarter (23.3%) report that they have no personal medical, hospital or accident insurance.” yet “Boomers are an optimistic group. Almost four in 10 Boomers (39.1%) believe that they and their household will be better off financially one year from now. Close to 90% believe they will be either financially ‘better off’ or ‘the same’ one year from now.”

Fascinating.

The Number : A Completely Different Way to Think About the Rest of Your Life

Boomers Don’t Want Your Pity, but They Do Demand Your Respect

Judann Pollack writes this interesting piece.

There are an estimated 78 million boomers in the U.S. (born between 1946 and 1965), and we are retiring later and working more after retirement. And even before those golden years, we’re shelling it out. Information Resources Inc. estimates boomers spend $46 billion annually on package goods alone, while Unilever’s research shows that we buy a disproportionate 60% of all package goods. One thing this generation isn’t about is giving in to anything gracefully. Its hallmark has been forcefulness, decisiveness and strength. So if you insist on reaching out to us now — years after you so cavalierly threw us away — your communication better be honest and thoughtful.
