| Forbes has blessed us baby boomers with an exquisite article on exercise and workouts. According to the article “despite many now coming into their 60s, the boomer generation has yet to slow down. In fact, many are undeterred by aging and are taking on one physical challenge after another, from endurance races to judo to pool diving. There’s even anecdotal evidence that the wisdom of age can offer a competitive advantage where strategy and pacing are concerned.” | |

The impending retirement of the baby boom generation is either going to be an unparalleled boon for nonprofits or its impact on volunteerism has been over-hyped. There’s no arguing, however, that by 2030 the number of people in the U.S. over 65 years old will double from its current 37 million.
What will happen to these baby boomers after they turn 65 is a question stakeholders from AARP and the Lions Club to the federal government have explored. Local nonprofits and communities also have a big stake in the answer. Key organizations that recruit volunteers are banking on baby boomers to be the largest volunteer cadre in U.S. history.
If true, their impact on volunteerism could be tremendous. In anticipation, the federal agency that oversees Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, VISTA, NCCC and other national service and volunteering programs has set a goal of engaging 75 million Americans in volunteering, up from 65.4 million in 2005. Far from being ripe for picking as volunteers, baby boomers will have to be encouraged to volunteerism in ways that consider their motivations and interests.

A confluence of factors, most notably an aging work force and the arrival on the scene of Generation Y, have made the generation gap seem wider and deeper today than ever before. It is in the IT departments of the enterprise, which are left dealing with the user habits and adoption rates of the rest of the payroll, where the generation gap is often most pronounced.
Making the mix work means changing a workplace’s culture: a prolonged process, but a necessary one. Shifts are needed in perceptions of both older and younger workers are perceived (such as that Baby Boomers don’t want to learn new technologies) and it is essential to keep in mind that there is more to an IT population than those nearest to retirement and those newest to the organization, even if they are the most noticeable groups.
The gap is widening, with more workers stacked at both ends of the age spectrum. There are approximately 80 million Baby Boomers, those born roughly between the years of 1946 and 1964, and 70 million in Generation Y, born 1978 through the present, but only 60 million in the middle in Generation X, those born 1965 to 1977. For most people, it’s nerve-wracking to get out there and start dating again after a divorce. But if you’re in that situation and need a little encouragement, listen to the lessons these women learned — good ones! — when they stepped out again.
It’s Not All About Sex
“I was shocked to find out that divorced men — at least in my experience — usually aren’t all about trying to get you into bed the way I felt like guys were when I was dating in my 20s. Sex is, of course, still a factor in a relationship, but I have found that the men I date now — most of whom are divorced as well — are interested in really getting to know me and developing a relationship before we take it to another level. Nice!” — Elaine, 41, Norfolk, Va.
You Can’t Hurry Love
“I was surprised to learn that despite beginning to date a month after my divorce, I wasn’t really ready for it just then. The end of my marriage was really rough, and after the divorce, I just didn’t feel confident. Because I felt that way, I didn’t put a lot of effort into dating, and I just had bad date after bad date. It took me at least a year of dating to really feel like I was ready to meet someone again. I never knew I wouldn’t simply be ready to date again once the ink dried on my divorce settlement but it’s true. Give yourself time to really heal, and things will go much more smoothly.” — Lisa, 42, Philadelphia
My ‘Type’ Changed
“I was surprised to find out that a lot of guys I would have totally ignored when I was single the first time around are the ones I now find the most intriguing. It’s amazing how the life experience and maturity a divorce can force upon you can result in your realizing sincere, emotionally available men are the ones who are really worth giving a chance.” — Patti, 39, Aurora, Colo.
Discussing the Kids Isn’t Off-Limits
“I soon realized that when you’re a divorced dater in your late 40s, a lot of first-date conversation revolves around your kids. It’s probably because the topic is just a nice, innocuous commonality you and your date have. I think I imagined that when I was on a date, we’d only discuss ‘adult’ things and leave the kids totally out of it. So at first I tried to avoid the topic. Now I’m comfortable with the fact that the subject of the kids always comes up, and then trading stories about your kids takes over the conversation for a while. I guess it’s a nice way to sniff out if your date is as into being a parent as you are.” — Bonnie, 45, Jacksonville, Fla.
My Expectations Are a Lot More Realistic
“When I started dating after my marriage ended, I had a much more realistic perspective on life and love, which was pleasantly surprising to me, as I have always been a hopeless romantic. Even though I’m looking for someone wonderful, I’m no longer looking for that fairy tale because I know that they don’t realistically exist. When my seemingly ‘perfect’ marriage ended, it showed me that in life, nothing is perfect and that sometimes things that seem great on the surface aren’t. Instead, I’m looking for a great guy who I will love in spite of his flaws, and vice versa.” — Juliana, 39, New York

The nation’s first baby boomer recently applied on-line for social security retirement benefits. With millions of baby boomers starting to enter retirement, financial advisors are asking people to plan ahead and begin planning as soon as possible.
Social security was never meant to be the primary retirement income. Retirement planners say that it’s up to the individual to invest their money for when they’re no longer in the work force. Unfortunately, some advisors tell people that standard savings should be enough for them to have 80 percent of their income yearly for when they retire.
Yet, it depends on what you plan to do during retirement. In the past, people used to say the general rule of thumb is that you will need 80 percent of your pre-retirement income. However, you may need 80 to a 100 percent or even more. Typically your expenses are not going to go down significantly, especially when you take into account health care and disability costs. According to a recent survey, eight of ten baby boomers are planning of working in their retirement years. That’s about 76 million workers with no intention of quitting anytime soon. Some may continue working out of financial necessity, others may do so to keep their healthcare benefits, while many will work to alleviate boredom.
Being productive and part of a team is paramount in the minds of many boomers after spending 30-plus years in the workplace. The thought of spending the next 20 or 30 years not working at all seems ludicrous to some. However, the most difficult aspect of staying in the workplace for some baby boomers may be the prospect of staying in their current occupation.
Managers and executives who reach their retirement years and desire a change, especially those who have spent their careers in one field may be afraid to try something new. They decide to retire early, only to end up missing the workplace and attempting to make a comeback a couple of years later. However, after such a long absence, most will find it difficult to break back into the workforce at anywhere near the pay or prestige they had before retiring. Read more »
