Baby Boomers Embrace RV Lifestyle


The Recreational Vehicle Industry Association claims that despite high fuel prices and renewed safety concerns about larger vehicles, recreation vehicle and camper sales have shot up 22 percent in the last three years, with 390,500 sold in 2006 alone, a record number. Nine percent of households headed by 35- to 55-year-olds own them, as opposed to only 8.6 percent of those headed by those 55 and older. Even in this jet-to-the-Himalayas age, he said, people still have their RV fantasies. America is still a driving culture, said Quinn, and while some buy Ferraris, others still want to have their homes on wheels. He said there are more and more resorts accommodating RVs, especially near lake or seaside areas. The average RV buyer, says the RVIA, is 49, makes $68,000 a year and travels 26 days a year. One thing the new RV owner has to remember is to find a place to park the new machine, said Quinn. A shiny 40-foot, half-million-dollar baby isn’t exactly going to fit in a rowhome side street.
