Boredom In Boomerdom
According to a recent survey, eight of ten baby boomers are planning of working in their retirement years. That’s about 76 million workers with no intention of quitting anytime soon. Some may continue working out of financial necessity, others may do so to keep their healthcare benefits, while many will work to alleviate boredom.
Being productive and part of a team is paramount in the minds of many boomers after spending 30-plus years in the workplace. The thought of spending the next 20 or 30 years not working at all seems ludicrous to some. However, the most difficult aspect of staying in the workplace for some baby boomers may be the prospect of staying in their current occupation.
Managers and executives who reach their retirement years and desire a change, especially those who have spent their careers in one field may be afraid to try something new. They decide to retire early, only to end up missing the workplace and attempting to make a comeback a couple of years later. However, after such a long absence, most will find it difficult to break back into the workforce at anywhere near the pay or prestige they had before retiring.
