Fidelity Investments Japan Establishs New Funds For Baby Boomers

Fidelity Investments Japan Ltd., trailing Nikko Asset Management Co. and Nomura Asset Management Co., plans to move oversight of its bond funds to Tokyo from Hong Kong to gain customers in the country’s retirement market. Japan has 6.9 million people born between 1947 and 1949 who will get about 85 trillion yen of retirement payouts in the next five years, according to estimates from Tokyo-based Nomura Holdings Inc., the nation’s biggest brokerage. Baby Boomers An Increasing Part Of The Fitness Arena

The baby boomer generation has yet to slow down. In fact, many are undeterred by aging and are taking on one physical challenge after another, from endurance races to judo to pool diving. There’s even anecdotal evidence that the wisdom of age can offer a competitive advantage where strategy and pacing are concerned. Boomers are also flocking to gyms at higher rates than the rest of the population. According to the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association, the number of gym members over the age of 55 reached 8 million in 2005, a 314% increase since 1990. Membership among 18- to 34-year-olds over the same time period increased by only 38.7%. But as motivated as the baby boomers seem to be, they do have their own set of unique needs and wants. Safety is the biggest issue, as injuries can not only sideline current health efforts but can put a serious kink in the plan for months or even years into the future. Read more »

Baby Boomers Spark Travel Boom

Bespoke, a fancy way of saying custom or tailor-made or independent, is one of the fastest-growing segments of the travel industry, fueled by affluent, been-there-done-that travelers who wouldn’t be caught dead on one of those board-the-buses tours. For a price, as little as $300 per person per day or as much as $300,000 for a two-week dream journey for a family, anything is possible. “This has been an incredible growth area,” says John Clifford, president of International Travel Management in San Diego (www.internationaltravelmanagement.com). “It’s probably 95 percent of my business. These are mature, well-traveled clients who’ve done London, Paris, Tokyo, Sydney. There’s this craving for something that is not as sterilized. They want to connect with people and culture and cuisine.” His typical clients include “affluent couples in the Baby Boomer generation, Gen X singles, affluent gay clients.” Read more »

BT Supports Regulatory Changes To Aid Work From Home Baby Boomers

This week the media giant BT will call on the Government to lift the barriers to starting a business at home as research shows a record 60% of start-ups are now run from the kitchen table or study. The list of demands includes financial incentives for home working, clearer tax rules and a more positive approach from councils to planning applications for work from home schemes. Seven out of 10 home workers chose to work from their place of residence because it created a better balance between work and leisure, while half said that home working reduced their overheads. A report last week suggested that a significant proportion of home businesses are run by people aged over 50. These so-called “senior start-ups” account for one in six fledgling companies and contribute £24.4bn to the UK economy, according to the study by Kingston University’s Small Business Research Centre. Baby Boomers Embrace RV Lifestyle

The Recreational Vehicle Industry Association claims that despite high fuel prices and renewed safety concerns about larger vehicles, recreation vehicle and camper sales have shot up 22 percent in the last three years, with 390,500 sold in 2006 alone, a record number. Nine percent of households headed by 35- to 55-year-olds own them, as opposed to only 8.6 percent of those headed by those 55 and older. Even in this jet-to-the-Himalayas age, he said, people still have their RV fantasies. America is still a driving culture, said Quinn, and while some buy Ferraris, others still want to have their homes on wheels. He said there are more and more resorts accommodating RVs, especially near lake or seaside areas. The average RV buyer, says the RVIA, is 49, makes $68,000 a year and travels 26 days a year. One thing the new RV owner has to remember is to find a place to park the new machine, said Quinn. A shiny 40-foot, half-million-dollar baby isn’t exactly going to fit in a rowhome side street. Downtowns Become Boomertowns

In communities as far flung as Birmingham, Northville and Ann Arbor, baby boomers are moving downtown, city officials report, bringing an influx of social and economic capital into downtown communities and businesses.

As Gen-Xers become homebuyers and baby boomers become empty nesters, there’s a growing trend of retirement age couples who are opting for city centers instead of suburban retirement communities. In fact, the number of seniors moving downtown has become large enough that it has spawned the term “ruppie,” or retired older person.

“Most housing development in the last 40 years is the suburban model, but the downtown model may be more suited for the single person or the empty nest couple,” says Susan Pollay of the Ann Arbor Downtown Development Authority. “For many boomers, downtown is an alternative to the suburbs.” Downtown living, often considered the province of the twenty- or thirty-something, has a lot to offer to the fifty-and-up crowd, Pollay says. Retiring Baby Boomers Will Effect The Bottom Line

Your Complete Retirement Planning Road Map: The Leave-Nothing-to-Chance, Worry-Free, All-Systems-Go Guide As indicated by recent studies, the mass exit (retirement) of baby boomers could have a marked effect on the productivity at many corporations unless companies intensify their efforts to develop younger talent. The skills and institutional knowledge lost when older workers retire won’t easily be replaced. Management shortages already are appearing in some sectors that have experienced a number of early retirements, including utilities and among hospital nursing staffs. Unfortunately, the post-war generation defined work as a way to be a winner in the game of life. These same baby boomers have been hesitant to hand over the reins, forcing many organizations to keep younger workers on the sidelines.
