The Baby Boomers may not be the “greatest generation,” but they are certainly the largest: 75 million citizens born between 1946 and 1964. Now, the eldest are in their 60s and soon will be facing the conventional age of retirement. But don’t expect them to pass from the scene - not yet anyway. The generation that has shaped American tastes for decades will be working longer and returning for second careers, thanks to shortages in the workforce.
It has become common to see senior citizens working as greeters at discount retailers, taking orders at fast food restaurants, and clerking at home-improvement centers. Personal savings is by far the preferred source of new business financing among baby boomers, dwarfing debt-related financing such as credit cards and loans. This is among the key findings of a national survey of more than 500 boomer business owners conducted by The Hartford Financial Services Group, Inc.
As less than half of new businesses started in the U.S. survive past the first four years, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, this finding underscores the critical importance of effective planning in helping boomers preserve and protect their business and personal assets. While using personal savings to launch a new business offers a number of financial benefits compared to using loans that can carry high interest rates, boomer business owners often face unique retirement challenges by putting their financial resources at risk later in life.
