How Computers Are Transforming the Baby Boomer Nation

Those in the postwar generation once rolled their eyes when its parents or grandparents would spin anecdotes that hinged on the absence of television, cheap mechanized transportation and air conditioning. But now they find themselves spanning perhaps the biggest technological divide in history.

Baby Boomers have robots sweeping the floor and chess software that beats the world’s greatest human player. They also have Microsoft Office, instant messaging, DVDs, iPods, BlackBerrys, Amazon, eBay, Google and credit cards that pay for chewing gum by means of infrared waves. Arguably, the best-known baby boomer of all is the computer itself. Like many boomers, the general-purpose computer was born in the years following World War II, grew up in a restrictive environment and went batty as a young adult. Now, like the generation it grew up alongside, the computer has assumed a leadership role, while still maintaining an unruly edge. Read more »

New startup looking for a few writers

Looking for experienced Chicago-based writers willing to do a little interesting freelance work over the next few weeks. We have a new Internet startup, a kind of universal problem-solving engine that brings together people with common concerns for collective action.

We need to populate the site with credible, solid, well-written campaigns such as boycotts, political actions, union actions, fundraisers, and so on — from both the right and the left. It looks like 200 to 300 words is sufficient to explain these things. I’ve done about 15 and have found that it takes me up to two hours to define, research and write a decent one, including perhaps finding a public-domain image as well as returns for edits (I don’t anticipate more than one editing round for any campaign). We’re asking that writers first send in quick pitches on each idea, possibly with one or two links for me to glance at, so that we can vet which ones are viable. I will show examples to anyone interested in knowing more before committing.

We’re offering $40 per campaign to several good writers who feel confident to do this. We’d prefer professional writers, but if you’re a journalism grad student with sharp research, writing, and copy editing skills, please apply. I’d greatly prefer Chicago-based people who can reach River North, although you can work from home.

Interested parties should send a couple of recent writing samples and a work history to me ASAP.

* Location: from home and River North
* Compensation: $40 per finished product
* Telecommuting is ok.
* This is a part-time job.
* This is a contract job.

BlogRush for Baby Boomers

You’ve probably seen the introduction of the newest blogging and social networking service — BlogRush. The website, released less then 48 hours ago, is the brain child of the famous Internet entrepreneur John Reese. It is purported to be “the fastest and easiest way to drive a flood of targeted readers to your blog.” How does the service work? Their video will give you a somewhat succinct answer to lot of question about how the process. BlogRush is a new way to syndicate content across blogs. You put a widget on your website to display text box ads and for each impression you deliver from your site, your ad would be displayed on other sites who use the BlogRush widget. This concept is similar to the old banner exchange networks, where you receive exchange credits for showing banners on your website, which were “cashed in” by showing your banner across other sites in the network. To learn more, click on the BlogRush tab located at the lower, right-hand corner of this display.

Threats To Your Money-market Fund

Money-market funds, almost certainly the core cash position in your portfolio, are now at the center of the financial-market crisis that started with the meltdown in the market for subprime mortgages. Some think that in the next few months some money-market fund will announce losses so big that they threaten the $1-a-share price that investors regard as guaranteed. The odds are that such an announcement will come from a so-called enhanced fund, one that took on additional risk to pay an extra bit of interest to investors. Baby Boomers Using Online Brain Games to Postpone The Onset of Alzheimer’s

The generation that refuses to age is not going to sit back and wait for Alzheimer’s Disease and other signs of dementia to take hold. Instead, savvy Baby Boomers are expanding their minds (no, not the way they did in the 60s) with the aid of the computer, puzzles, and games. A brain health movement is sweeping the nation, and 60+-year-olds are riding the crest of the wave. Some recommended anti-brain drain steps you can take include engaging in a physical activity, maintaining an active social life, continuing your education, eating a low-fat diet, and playing ntellectual games. Non-repetitive games like solving crossword and jumble puzzles, playing chess, and working with other types of brainteasers, can help keep your brain fit. Alzheimer\'s from the Inside Out

Social Sites Catering to People of a Certain Age

The prospect of deriving income from a new breed of readership is driving a wave of investment into boomer and older-oriented social networking sites that offer like-minded (and like-aged) individuals discussion and dating forums, photo-sharing, news and commentary, and chatter about diet, fitness and health care. Last week, VantagePoint Ventures, an early investor in MySpace, announced that it had led a $16.5 million round of financing for Multiply, a social networking site aimed at people who are settled. In August, Shasta Ventures led a $4.8 million financing round for TeeBeeDee, a site coming out of its test stage this month. The name is short for “To Be Determined” as in, just because you’re not trolling for a mate on MySpace doesn’t mean your life is over. A Retirement Checklist

I’m sending kudos to ZenHabits for the article entitled “7 Things You Can Do Today to Prepare for Retirement”

Definitely worth a read

This is aimed at people like myself who never really gave retirement a thought. It’s aimed at people in their 20s who really should start now and can do so with some simple steps. It’s aimed at people in their 30s and 40s who need to start now (although it’s not too late).

You can do these things today, without too much effort. Read up on them, make a call, get started!

1. Max Out Your 401(k). Probably the easiest and best thing you can do to get your retirement plan going. It’s easy, especially if you are an employee, as you are probably already enrolled in a 401(k). All you have to do is fill out a form to increase it to the maximum contribution.

2. Start now. Even if you’re really late in getting started (as I was), it’s important to start right away. Even if it’s just a little at a time.

Baby Booomers Fueling Missoula MT Condo Boom

Missoula’s new Dearborn Avenue condominiums won’t be complete until February, though the first model will be available to tour in about two weeks. That’s when the building’s developers will start selling the units, with the lowest-priced going for $132,900 and the highest for $295,500.

The rapid rise in condo prices is in line with the rest of the region’s real estate scene, which has continued to see strong demand from buyers despite a downturn in the rest of the nation’s housing market. Still, sales have slowed a bit this summer, and prices are no longer accelerating like they were. So far, that fact isn’t keeping developers from pushing more condos onto the scene, both in the form of new construction and with apartment or hotel “conversions.” In fact, with the year not yet over, Missoula appears poised to set a record for new condo projects.

Missoula is filling in as its population continues to grow. It is becoming increasingly urban, and many new residents are comfortable with living an urban lifestyle. Meanwhile, the entire state is seeing an increase in the number of residents age 65 and older. With its two hospitals, Missoula in particular is attracting a lot of retirees. Many of these folks could afford a stand-alone home at the end of some quiet cul-de-sac. Instead, they are looking for something close to the
action. Read more »
